August 2025 Tariff Increase on Lithium Batteries: What You Need to Know

Starting August 1, 2025, the U.S. government will be re-imposing Section 301 tariffs on a wide range of Chinese-manufactured goods, including lithium-ion batteries. These tariffs are expected to significantly impact the cost and timeline of imports, especially for industries that rely on lithium-based energy products.

This change comes as part of the Biden administration's trade enforcement measures, with the goal of reducing U.S. dependency on Chinese supply chains while boosting domestic clean energy production.

Which Products Will Be Affected?

Lithium-based products returning to the tariff list include:

• Lithium-ion batteries for electric bikes, scooters, and portable equipment

• Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries

• Battery packs for energy storage systems

• Raw materials and components such as anodes and cathodes

Tariff increases may range from 7.5% to as high as 25% depending on classification. These rates will apply on arrival at U.S. ports starting in August 2025.

Why This Matters for You

If you plan to place an order from China, now is the time to act. Sea shipments leaving in mid-to-late July may still arrive before the August deadline, avoiding the additional fees. Air freight orders may still face risk of delays and tariff charges depending on arrival dates.

Delays in ordering could lead to:

• Reduced inventory availability
